It's officially the end of an era in Illinois politics.
Democratic State Representative Emanuel Chris Welch of suburban Westchester is the new speaker of the House of Representatives. He replaces fellow Democrat Michael Madigan who has held the position since the early 80's. Welch got 70 votes with 44 in the House voting in favor of Republican lawmaker Jim Durkin. Democrat Lance Yednock of Ottawa decided to vote “present”.
Madigan put out a statement ahead of the vote saying it was time for new leadership in the House. He's been under pressure from some lawmakers to step aside due to his link to a bribery scheme involving ComEd.
