A voluntary evacuation has been issued for folks living and working south of the canal in Utica.
Village President David Stewart strongly suggests everyone moving their assets now if owning a home or business in the area of the east end of Washington Street south along Route 178 past village hall. Stewart says the Illinois River is rising faster than anytime in recent history and an evacuation could become mandatory.
The river is expected to breach Route 178 and get to its third-highest level on record by Tuesday night at the Starved Rock Lock and Dam. Village officials are also watching Clarks Run Creek on the north side of town.
