What started off as local outrage over a young couple’s carving into some sandstone at Starved Rock has morphed into something much bigge,r as the story has been picked up by media in the Quads, the New York Post, and Newsweek, among other outlets.
Conservation Police Sergeant Phil Wire says they’ve talked to the woman in the picture, and now they’re trying to track down the guy – recently moved to Chicago from California. Wire says he thinks the couple just used a burned stick and only caused minimal damage. So, they may just be ticketed or warned.
Adding to the outrage was another person, who commented on Facebook that he’d made deep carvings into sandstone elsewhere in the park. Conservation police now are trying to find him. He’s apparently not connected to the couple in the picture.
