Chester Weger is officially a free man.
The 80-year-old from Oglesby was driven from Pickneyville Correctional Center Friday morning after serving nearly 60 years in prison for the murder of a suburban woman in 1960 at Starved Rock State Park. In talking with KFVS-12 out of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, Weger maintained his innocence. He says it’s wonderful to be out to see friends and relatives and that he didn’t think the day would ever come. He says he wants to spend time with family in the days ahead.
Weger is expected to stay at St. Leonard’s Ministries in Chicago. He was granted parole in November during his 24th parole board hearing.
