Separating storm sewers from sanitary sewer lines is something that’s proven costly for cities. Decision makers in La Salle just learned they're getting a helping hand from the state.
The city has been awarded a $500,000 Community Development Block Grant to continue its mandated sewer separation project to prevent overflows. City Engineer Brian Brown says the grant will lead to about 45 to 60 acres of land north of 11th Street having its lines separated. The city will spend roughly $280,000 to supplement the grant money.
Brown says the more grants they get, the more likely the city can lessen the need to raise water and sewer bills.
