The Livingston County Sheriff’s office is warning about a scam that’s making the rounds, and this one actually uses the traditional mail.
Victims of the “Secret Shopper” scam get a check in the mail with a job offer. Once you’ve deposited the check, which of course is fake, you’re asked to test an in-store money-transfer service by sending back some of the money you’ve deposited. Or, you’re told to buy gift cards and send the cards’ numbers to the scammers. Either way, you’re going to end up using your own money, since the transfers will take place before your bank can uncover the fake checks.
Sheriff Tony Childress says that if anyone ever asks you to deposit a check and then send money in any way, it’s probably a scam. He suggests you sign up for free scam alerts by clicking FTC dot gov – slash- scams.
