In their statement released Sunday morning, District 17 State Police say a preliminary investigation is underway regarding an incident on the I-39 Abe Lincoln bridge Saturday. District 17 troopers say they responded to the site after 11am on a report of a person jumping from the bridge into the Illinois River. The State Police continue investigation with help from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
Here's what WLPO has learned: A driver claims to have seen a white man wearing a baseball cap, light blue shirt and khaki colored shorts on the bridge just after 11am. First responders found a bicycle on the southbound side of I-39. Peru River Rescue was first to the scene and later joined by water rescue teams from Oglesby, Ottawa and Putnam County.
