Did Commissioner James Cullinan jump the gun on naming a new police chief in Oglesby?
While state statute seems to indicate Cullinan has the ability to remove or discharge a police or fire chief, it would seem the full Oglesby City Council has to have a say in who becomes the new police chief. The statute says if the appointing authority which in this case would be Cullinan, removes a chief, then the appointing authority “shall file with the corporate authorities the reasons for such removal or discharge, which removal or discharge shall not become effective unless confirmed by a majority vote of the corporate authorities.” Corporate authorities would be the full city council.
According to at least two other members of the city council, they didn’t know Cullinan was making a change at police chief Thursday morning. The city council will meet Monday night.
