A man is dead this morning after his pickup truck fell from the Vermilion River bridge on Route 178 at Lowell.
Before 9:00 last night, Tonica Fire Department responded to a call of a vehicle in the water. WLPO morning host Rod Thorson was at the scene of the rescue and reports that the vehicle was a pickup truck that failed to negotiate a curve on the road and missed the bridge, falling an estimated 70 feet into the river. Tonica Fire initially called for the Utica Fire Department with a rope-rescue crew, but Utica reports that they were called off almost immediately.
WLPO will have more details on this accident, and the identity of the driver, as it becomes available.
