Peru fire truck - file photo

A Friday afternoon fire call in Peru was strange, to say the least. A heat source possibly started some sawdust on fire in a basement at 1318 Center street about 2pm. Strangely enough, the woman living there had just finished calling firemen when she walked outside to spot a fire truck about to drive past her house.

Firefighter Matt McLaughlin, by coincidence, was returning the truck after weighing it. As he drove by, he thought he noticed smoke and stopped. With additional firefighters, the small amount of flames were extinguished. The most serious problem was the smoke damage throughout the house.
