The Illinois High School Association today (Monday) announced the locations it’s chosen for athletic and scholastic team championships, and The Peoria Civic Center has lost some events.
The Boys’ Basketball State Finals will return to the campus of the University of Illinois with next year’s state tournament. They’ll take place at the State Farm Center, also known as the Assembly Hall. The event was previously held at U of I from 1919 to 1995. The Peoria Civic Center also bid on it. Also, the Girls’ Basketball state finals will remain at Redbird Arena on the campus of Illinois State University for the next three seasons. The Peoria venue missed out on this opportunity, too.
The Peoria Civic Center isn’t even hanging on to academic events, losing the Scholastic Bowl Tournament to Heartland Community College in Normal.
The Civic Center didn’t miss out on every competition. The venue will continue to house what is believed to be the largest team chess tournament in the world through 2023.
