Have you been wondering what exactly happened to cause Monday’s fatal crash near Matthiessen State Park? An official accident report is now out.
Troopers say 68-year-old Robert Black Jr. of Grand Ridge was driving a semi southbound on Route 178. As he approached the Matthiessen State Park entrance, a Hyundai Sonata driven by a 16-year-old boy from Chicago turned left from the park entrance onto Route 178. The semi hit the driver’s side of the car. The car was pushed into a ditch while the semi jackknifed and blocked both lanes of the road. No tickets have been written.
Black Jr. wasn’t hurt while the other driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A 16-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl riding in the car were hospitalized with serious injuries. The girl was flown to Peoria while the boy was taken to Illinois Valley Community Hospital in Peru. They both live in Chicago.
