The mother of the victim of Monday night's pit bull attack in La Salle described a horrific scene as she kept vigil at her son's side Tuesday.
Eleven-year-old Esteban Rodriguez was playing outside in the 800 block of O'Conor Avenue at about 6 o'clock Monday night when a neighbor's dog began chasing him. Esteban's mother, Mandi, described the scene for WLPO.
Mandi says Esteban suffered serious wounds to his back and spine, both arms, chest and abdomen. His wounds are severe enough that he may never recover full use of his left arm, which he was using to cover his face during the attack. Mandi told WLPO she and others were doing all they could to pull the dog off her son.
Finally, Mandi says, the boyfriend of the dog's owner, 32-year-old Tricia Renini, strangled the animal to death to get it to give up the attack. Esteban was taken by ambulance to OSF in Peoria. No telling at this point how long it'll be before he recovers fully. That's where he is now, his mother at his side. Esteban will be a sixth-grader at La Salle Lincoln this fall.
