Numbers from La Salle Veterans Home indicate improvement in its COVID-19 problem. Administrator Angela Mehlbrech has issued letters to the residents, their families and staff since the problem developed around November 1. In a letter this Friday, Mehlbrech says 106 residents and 96 staff have tested positive since the crisis began. But, she added that 38 residents and 76 staff members have recovered. It also added that, unfortunately, one additional resident, who tested positive has passed away. Twenty-eight have passed away since November 1. Using Mehlbrech's numbers, by our estimate, it leaves 40 residents and twenty staff still afflicted by COVID-19.

As you know, a Senate Veterans Affairs committee held a virtual hearing Tuesday on the La Salle Vets Home problem. In that hearing, a Federal report indicated ineffective hand sanitizer as one cause of the problem. It also listed questionable ventilation and improper PPE from the staff. A Halloween party that some staff attended will be looked at closer.
