High school football in the spring? If new plans from the Illinois High School Association play out, that won't be the only sports change for the upcoming school year.
The IHSA just released new guidance for the 2020-21 sports seasons. Along with football, boys soccer and girls volleyball, all considered “medium” risk sports, will move from their traditional fall homes to the new “Spring” season classified by the IHSA. The “Spring” season will run from February 15 to May 1, making way for the addition of a new “Summer” season from May 3 to June 26.
Sports scheduled for the Summer season include baseball, softball, track and field, girls soccer and boys tennis.
The IHSA hopes to kick off sports with a Fall season running from August 10 to October 24. The Winter sports slate will run from November 16 to February 13.
IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson said the new sports plan “remains fluid.”
