The Illinois Elementary School Association has voted unanimously to cancel the upcoming sports seasons for boys' and girls' golf, boys' baseball, girls' softball, and cross-country. The board will meet again in late August to make a decision regarding girls basketball.
In announcing the cancellations, the board said the limitations placed on school sports by the Illinois Department of Public Health makes competing in these sports difficult or impossible. The organization went on to point out that summer leagues and travel ball can take place because they're not being held to the same health-department mandates schools are. Finally, the IESA said that it understands the disappointment of students and their parents over this decision, but that the students are mainly aged 12 to 14, and that they'll have many more opportunities to take part in school sports.
