A highway maintenance worker from Chicago is dead after being hit by a car a little after 10 this morning (Wednesday) on Interstate 80 in Bureau County.
According to State Police, the 47-year-old male worker, whose name has not been released, was struck by a red Honda van near westbound mile marker 44 while standing outside his maintenance truck. He was assisting with traffic control in a maintenance zone. The truck was equipped with an arrow board.
The Bureau County Coroner’s Office pronounced the worker dead at the scene.
The driver of the vehicle that hit the worker, 84-year-old Robert D. Bowen of Macomb, was cited for failure to yield the right of way to a vehicle or pedestrian working within a highway construction or maintenance zone. Bowen was transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
