The Great American Smokeout is coming up next Thursday, November 21st. The annual event is sponsored by the American Cancer Society and challenges smokers to quit for one day. The hope is that they’ll quit permanently.
As you might imagine, the LaSalle County Health Department supports the campaign, and asks that you join in the effort. The department notes that smoking is the most preventable cause of death in the United States today. And, it’s associated with increased risk of cancers of the mouth, nasal cavities, pharynx, larynx, esophagus, stomach, pancreas, liver, cervix, kidney, and bladder. Despite these facts, more than 3 million Americans still smoke.
For help “kicking ash,” you can contact the Illinois Department of Public Health’s Quit line at 866-QUIT-YES.
