A grand jury in La Salle County feels there’s enough evidence to pursue criminal charges against a suspended funeral director from Streator.
Fifty-one-year-old William “BJ” Elias of Streator was indicted Tuesday on seven felony counts of theft and violating the Illinois Funeral or Burial Funds Act. Elias is accused of misappropriating thousands of client dollars. The thefts allegedly started in January of 2017 and continued until October of 2018. His funeral director's license has been suspended indefinitely.
Elias is accused of making false reports to cover up the theft of illegally paying his funeral home for multiple pre-arranged or pre-need Funeral Trust contracts. He has posted $7,500 and is out of custody.
