Illinois hunters killed more than 50,000 deer during the opening weekend of the Illinois Firearm season last weekend. That’s quite a bit fewer than the nearly 59,000 taken during last year’s opening weekend.
According to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, the number was down in all the counties in Starved Rock Country.
The state’s seven-day firearm season winds up over the four-day period of December 5 through December 8. Archery deer season continues through January 19, except in counties open to firearm hunting next weekend. If you hunt only with arrows, you'll have to take that weekend off.
