As it turns out, there is a lot more to the story of a semi catching fire along Interstate 39 near Lostant.
As you heard earlier this week a trailer hauling 36,000 pounds of cheese burned on the shoulder of the interstate Saturday morning. The initial report was that the driver had pulled over to sleep. Troopers say before the fire and snooze, Stephen Muiruri of Georgia was driving erratically down I-39 and at one point he hit a culvert in a median which damaged his truck and led to the eventual fire.
The story gets even more interesting after that. Muiruri and his damaged truck were both taken to Senica’s Towing La Salle. At some point the towing company and police believe the driver got back into his damaged truck minus the burnt trailer and drove it off the lot. It’s now been entered as stolen.
The trucker is working for Mid-America Transportation Corporation out of Romeoville. Detectives say the company is not cooperating.
