Peru has been around awhile. One piece of evidence is brick streets on the south side of town.
Plans are in place to fix up a block of bricks on 2nd Street from Fulton to Peoria Street. City Engineer Eric Carls says the work will mean removing each brick by hand, building a new base and curbs for the road and then putting each brick back in by hand. City ordinance calls for this block to stay a bricked road. Mayor Scott Harl hinted that the brick road improvement would be paid from money allocated by State Rep. Lance Yednock.
The city council also plans to fix up other streets around town this summer as part of their yearly street program. Universal Asphalt in La Salle is getting that job for more than $600,000.
