Gas stations in Utica and La Salle were allegedly targeted by a group of counterfeiters.
Tuesday afternoon an alert went out to police about individuals using fake $100 bills at Casey’s and Shell in Utica. A La Salle officer stopped a vehicle matching the description of the suspects at Flying J. Twenty-two-year-old Joshua Smith, 18-year-old Thomas Jones and a 13-year-old boy all from Chicago were taken into custody. The adults are charged with two counts of forgery and are in jail. The 13-year-old was released to his parents but does face charges as well.
Investigators say the trio was successful in using fake cash at one location but unsuccessful at the other two.
