Why a boat exploded during a training exercise in Oglesby remains under investigation.
According to Oglesby Fire Chief Ron Papurello, his department’s safety committee is talking with the maker of the Zodiac boat that malfunctioned last Tuesday, sending three firefighters to the hospital. The firefighters were doing river rescue training near the Oglesby boat launch along the Vermilion River when a rupture occurred, causing an explosion. All three were eventually treated and released from Illinois Valley Community Hospital.
Despite the scary incident, Papurello says he would like to replace the Zodiac boat with another.
