“A lot of smoke with a very small fire,” that’s how Utica Fire Chief Ben Brown described an incident at Northern White Sand.
Firefighters were called to the sand company along Route 6 for a report of black smoke coming from a building. The initial 9-1-1 call came out just before 10 o'clock Friday morning. Utica immediately asked for mutual aid from Oglesby, La Salle and Wallace Fire Departments. However about 15 minutes into the call Brown cancelled the need for mutual aid and said things were under control. He says the fire was with a machine and workers had it out by time firefighters arrived.
The scene was cleared in about a half hour and plant operations continued on.
