The states attorney in La Salle County was almost thrust into the national spotlight.
Karen Donnelly took to her Facebook page Wednesday night to say she is extremely honored to be asked to consider the appointment as special prosecutor in the Jussie Smollett case. That is the Chicago case involving an actor claiming he was a victim of a homophobic and racial attack. Eventually police said he made up the attack but any false report charges were dropped against Smollett. The FBI though is said to be investigating why the charges were dropped.
Donnelly admits she wasn’t the only states attorney asked to be a special prosecutor in the high profile case. She says she could never commit La Salle County resources to prosecute a case in Cook County, especially “when we are facing a budget crisis, so I respectfully declined.”
