It was an exciting weekend for Illinois Valley Sports.

In the post-season, something clicked for the St. Bede Lady Bruins softball team, and they rolled along, winning everything except their first state semi-final at Peoria. But, the Lady Bruins bounced back to win third place Saturday and their fans loved them for it. Coach Rob Ruppert's girls scratched out two runs in the 7th and kept Hardin-Calhoun off the scoreboard. It was at the Bruin gym later that fans welcomed their Lady Bruins home.

Waterloo High School faced its own Waterloo when the Marquette Crusaders boys’ baseball team upended them on Saturday, 14 to 5, to become Class 1A state champions.

And the Illinois Valley Coal Miners Youth Rugby Club, in its inaugural season, won the state championship in Byron.
