LaSalle County Broadcasting participated in station tours, career mentoring, job fairs, on-air and advertising staff training and events in the community throughout the year. Staff participants discuss the education required for broadcasting and the different job opportunities that are available working in radio.
Students are able to work with staff members to learn about the operation of a radio station, the skills required and the availability of radio careers they are interested in pursuing.
Illinois Valley Community College (IVCC) Student – Participant: John Spencer, Vice President of Operations. Kyle Dickman, an IVCC student, was working towards a degree in Communications and interested in radio broadcasting. Kyle was writing an essay for his English class and asked John some questions regarding working in radio broadcasting. October 26, 2017
LaSalle-Peru High School Student – Participants: Joyce McCullough, President, Mark Lippert, Vice President of Sales & Marketing, John Spencer, Vice President of Operations and Steve Vogler, Chief Engineer. LaSalle County Broadcasting (LCBC) management staff met with Lucas Burris, a student at LaSalle-Peru High School who was working on a research paper project. Lucas was given a tour of the radio station. Steve put together a time-line history for WLPO and gave Lucas a copy. Everyone answered questions, ranging from what year WLPO signed-on, what it takes to operate three stations and what it takes to serve the community you are licensed in. November 6, 2017
Illinois Valley Entrepreneurial Opportunity Class Tour – Participants: Mark Lippert, Vice President of Sales & Marketing and John Spencer, Vice President of Operations. Ten students from high schools throughout the area visited our station touring our studios, meeting our staff and leaning about what we do and how we run three radio stations. We talked about radios importance in our communities, how we help local businesses and jobs available in the field of broadcasting. December 8, 2017
LaSalle-Peru High School Mock Interviews – Participant: John Spencer, Vice President of Operations. John conducted a mock interview with a senior student in a Business class at LaSalle-Peru High School. John looked over his resume and asked questions as if he was applying for a job with a company. After the interview, John provided written and oral feedback on the student’s performance along with encouragement. December 4, 2017
LaSalle-Peru High School Career Fair – Participant: Ginny Parnisari, Human Resources. Ginny talked to sophomore students at LaSalle-Peru High School during the Career Fair. Discussed going to college and job opportunities, including career options in radio broadcasting with the students. 39 businesses and services participated in the event. March 13, 2018
National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Broadcast Training “Finding the Right Workplace & Getting Hired” Participant: Joyce McCullough, President. On Sunday, April 8, at a panel discussion and afterwards, Joyce met with graduating broadcast students and told them about our small market stations and how they could hone their skills in many career areas. For example, a news or sales person could try his/her hand at sports coverage or production work. On Monday evening, April 9, Joyce met with Travis Bilger and talked to him about opportunities available in a market like ours and encouraged him to send out resumes, build a network and reconnect with her if she could help him in his broadcast career. Illinois Valley Community College (IVCC) Classes – Participant: Rod Thorson, WLPO On-Air Personality. Rod taught a broadcast communication class for continuing education at IVCC. Rod taught the principles of broadcasting and gave a tour of the WLPO radio. April 18, 2018
LaSalle County Broadcasting encourages interested youth community groups to tour the station and staff interacts with the students and gives them information about broadcasting covering all the different jobs in radio. One of the highlights is showing them how we record commercials.

Pat Bryson of Bryson Broadcasting, Marketing Consultant. Participants: Mark Lippert, VP Sales & Marketing and LaSalle County Broadcasting sales staff. Pat Bryson helps our sales staff become more proficient in helping our clients grow their business through target marketing campaigns using radio, digital and event marketing. Pat spent most of her time this trip working with our two newest sales reps. She did extensive training with them and also spent time on the street helping them improve their sales skills. We also had group sessions with the sales staff on how to ask good questions about client’s digital marketing efforts and how we can help them. October 16-20, 2017
Pat Bryson of Bryson Broadcasting, Marketing Consultant. Participants: LaSalle County Broadcasting Sales Staff. Participants: LaSalle County Broadcasting sales staff. Pat works on training the sales reps and helps them become more proficient in helping our clients grow their business through target marketing campaigns using radio, digital and event marketing. Pat conducted group training sessions with the sales reps focusing on asking deeper questions to help them grow their client’s business. She also spent time “on the street” with each rep observing how they interact with their clients. After the visit Pat provides suggestions to the Vice President of Sales & Marketing on how to coach each rep to become better at serving marketing needs for our clients. April 16-20, 2018
Kevin Robinson of Robinson Media Training works with LaSalle County Broadcasting On-Air staff. John Spencer, Vice President of Operations has Kevin critique the On-Air staff weekly (individually and co-hosts together). Kevin helps them become more effective communicators to better serve our audience. Kevin listens to audio and compares notes with John Spencer. October 2017 – July 2018
Station staff participates in community events throughout the year to promote station awareness and to talk to potential station employees and customers.
NCI Work Employer Conference – Participant: John Spencer, Vice President of Operations. John attended the day-long conference at Mendota Civic Center learning about improving customer service and staff development and the latest developments in Labor Law. John is a NCI board member and he also presented individual achievement, leadership and service awards. October 27, 2017
Illinois Valley Community College (IVCC) Employer Etiquette Dinner – Participant: Brad Spelich, On-Air Personality. Brad was one of six Illinois Valley employers who participated in the event. There was a formal dinner and shared interviews and etiquette tips in addition to networking with members of the IVCC student body. November 6, 2017
Fill the Mayflower Food Drive – Participants: Mark Lippert, VP Sales & Marketing, John Spencer, VP Operations, Rod Thorson, On-Air Personality, Sean Walsh, On-Air Personality, Doug Safranek, Account Executive. Annual Feed the Mayflower food drive for the Illinois Valley Food Pantry. We collected food at the local Hy-Vee grocery story that people bought and donated to the Food Pantry. The Mayflower truck was donated by Stevenson Trucking. At the end of the day we delivered all the food to the Food Pantry.

LaSalle County Historical Society Trivia – Participant: Jeremy Aitken, News Director. Jeremy represented LaSalle County Broadcasting as host of the Trivia Night. There was a large attendance of people at the Trivia Night. Jeremy was able to promote WLPO/WAJK/WLWF. February 24, 2018
Peru Education Foundation Trivia – Participant: Jeremy Aitken, News Director. Jeremy hosted the school fundraiser. There was a large attendance at the Trivia Night. Jeremy was able to promote WLPO/WAJK/WLWF. March 10, 2018
Illinois Valley Community Hospital Community Variety Show – Participant: John Spencer, VP Operations. John co-hosted the event featuring 16 local acts from singers, dancers, musicians and a comedian. The show drew nearly 1,000 people to LaSalle-Peru High School auditorium and raised money for a new MRI unit for the hospital. March 12, 2018
Illinois Valley Tumbling and Trampoline Meet – Participant: Sean Zears, On-Air Personality. Sean announced the events and told team members where they needed to report. Sean was the guest announcer for two hours. March 12, 2018
Illinois Valley Home Show – Participants: John Spencer, VP of Operations, Rod Thorson, On-Air Personality, Mark Lippert, VP Sales & Marketing, Betha Ghighi, Account Executive, Bob Mullane, Account Executive, Doug Safranek, Account Executive, Adrian Burleson, Account Executive. The station staff attended and worked the annual home show at Celebrations banquet center. The event attracted nearly 1,000 people, browsing booths featuring 40 home improvement businesses. Staff talked with listeners about the stations, our programming and how we serve the community. March 18, 2018
St. Baldrick’s – Participant: Ryan Ziegler, On-Air Personality. Ryan attended the St. Baldrick’s event at Jeremiah Joe’s in Ottawa from 10:30am to 12:15pm. Ryan did a remote broadcast from 11am to noon. March 17, 2018
Operation Hero-Box: Semi to Soldiers – Participant: Rod Thorson, On-Air Personality. Rod was the co-host and did a remote broadcast in downtown LaSalle. Local businesses and individuals came together to generate more than 48,000 individual items to be sent to deployed men and women of the Armed Forces. May 25, 2018
Participated in one job fair to discuss job opportunities available at LaSalle County Broadcasting.
Illinois Valley Community College (IVCC) Career Fair – April 3, 2018. Participant: Ginny Parnisari, Human Resources. From 1pm to 5pm, Ginny talked to participants attending the Job Fair looking for employment. This was the 27th Annual Job Fair which is held in the school gymnasium. The job fair not only attracts students but job seekers from all over the Illinois Valley area. 76 area businesses presented their job opportunities.
